It is important to embrace your natural hair but it is as important to embrace your individuality

YBN: What does being natural mean to you?

KW: Being natural to me is beyond just hair! Being natural is embracing who you are, being one with yourself. Knowing that your mission in life is beyond just you. To give back to nature (people) planting seeds (knowledge) for them to grow in consciousness which will shift everything else around them in their lives. Reach one teach one.

YBN: What are some of the challenges you've faced while getting to know your natural hair and learning to love it?

KW: I would say my challenge would be patience mostly. My hair is long when it's not facing shrinkage and is very thick so my arms do not love me during twist out styles (lol). In order to master anything it takes much practice. I am still learning but I'm in a good place now than I have ever been before.

YBN: Were you always natural? If not, how long and what made you transition?

KW: No, I have not always been natural. I got my first "relaxer" in middle school and returned to my natural hair in College. The reason that I returned to being natural is because the maintenance of "relaxed" hair became overwhelming for me including the money being spent in the salon. Little did I know natural hair needs T.L.C and requires the same type of maintenance and the cost in products especially for my product junkie girls requires the same things as "relaxed" hair. I was mistaken but I don't regret my choice to return natural at all.

YBN: Does your natural hair inspire your personal style?

KW: I'm an island girl to the T so when you see me before anything else you see my hair, friends can spot me out based on my fro so being that I am cultured my style is inspired by that 100% My hair is my culture so everything flows from that.

YBN: As a busy model,  runway coach, singer, and song writer, how do you manage time to care for your hair?

KW: With anything that you do you make time. I may be able to care for my hair on my down time or squeeze it in if I know that I have a shoot or any type of public engagement.

YBN: What are your favorite products?

KW: So far Castor oil, Sheamoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Hask Monoi Coconut Oil Nourishing Shampoo

YBN: On a scale from 1-10 how important is embracing natural hair to you ? Why?

KW: It is important to embrace your natural hair but it is as important to embrace your individuality. To many people rate the makings of a person based on how they wear their hair or make up or lack thereof. Being natural doesn't automatically give you a sense of enlightenment or entitlement and being "relaxed" or wearing weaves doesn't mean that you have low self-esteem and don't know who you are. These are assumptions and stereotypes that need to be broken. Everything that you do, do it with purpose that sparks your inward happiness no matter how you physically express it.
